out in nature…

last week i joined 50 high schoolers on a canoe trip in Concord, Mass. for a freelance assignment. i realized it had been a long time since i had been out on the water in the northeast. i was used to kayaking in florida, through the mangroves, with dolphins and sting rays and fish almost jumping into our boats, some of the birds were the same, but most were different… i’ve been through so many transitions in the past few years it was nice to have an assignment that allowed me the time to look around and truly absorb my surroundings and to appreciate this slow spring after such a long harsh winter.

at the end of april i photographed Stilisti Salon’s annual Cut-a-Thon benefitting Children’s Hospital Boston’s Trauma Center. it was an amazing event with hair cuts, face painting, crafts, games, and food.

on saturday i covered a rally at the state house. i met Hunter Cogswell, 11, carrying an unloaded AR-15 and a flag that said ‘come and take it,’ with a picture of a machine gun. he told me that he brought the gun and the flag because he wanted to be noticed and he wanted to stand up for gun rights.

the rally was called the ‘honor your oath rally,’ because some representatives in the state house felt that their 189 colleagues who voted to repeal NH’s ‘stand your ground,’ law were violating their oath to protect and uphold the constitution, specifically the 2nd amendment. there were petitions calling for the arrest of those 189 representatives. as far as i know no arrests have been made.
